Standards New Zealand is New Zealand's leading developer of Standards and Standards based solutions.

Standards New Zealand is the operating arm of the Standards Council. Together we are part of New Zealand’s standards and conformance infrastructure. We are an autonomous Crown entity responsible for managing the development and distribution of Standards across a range of sectors. Standards New Zealand is a self-funded, not-for-profit organisation, relying on revenue primarily from contracts with sponsors to develop Standards, but also from sales of Standards’ publications.

As an autonomous Crown entity, we are part of, but at arms length, from Government. The autonomous way we operate and our self-funded status helps us maintain an independent stance which, in turn, facilitates a cross section of industry and stakeholder buy-in to Standards development.

The work of Standards New Zealand enhances the nation’s economy, efficiency, and international competitiveness, and helps meet community demand for a safe and sustainable environment.

Standards exist for the good of all New Zealanders by making life simpler and safer.

Standards provide information, establish measurements, and set quality and safety levels, delivering benefits and clarity for both the public and private sectors. Standards enable a less prescriptive regulatory environment to operate, encourage stakeholder participation, and help eliminate unnecessary business compliance costs.

A Standard can enable highly technical information, often needed to support policies or legislation, to be written into a document to aid understanding of context by users. An existing Standard can help minimise unnecessary duplication, confusion and inconsistencies. Standards are especially useful tools to support policy development and implementation.

Standards New Zealand uses a robust and recognised process that relies on expert committee consensus and widespread consultation with affected parties, including public input. Our Standards are formally approved by the Standards Council (in accordance with the requirements of the Standards Act 1988).
