Risk Management in Sports and Recreation

30 January 2006

Guidelines for risk management in sport and recreation
SNZ HB 8669:2004

The unfortunate death of a cyclist during Saturday’s Mt Taranaki cycle race is a reminder about the need for good risk management in sport and recreation events.

Standards New Zealand’s risk management handbook was developed in 2004 in partnership with ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation) and SPARC (Sport and Recreation Council).

“The details and cause of Saturday’s tragedy are yet to be established, but these accidents serve as a serious reminder about the importance of careful planning for sport and recreation events,” said Standards New Zealand’s GM Marketing, Grant Thomas.

The handbook, entitled: Guidelines for Risk Management in Sport and Recreation (SNZ HB 8669:2004), enhances safety for all participants and spectators at sport or recreation event.

"The Guidelines provide a series of frameworks and a much-needed element of certainty in an area that the industry had identified as requiring urgent attention," said Simon Gianotti, ACC Programme Manager for Sport and Recreation.

"The committee was made up of a great group of people across the sector who came together for a common purpose, drawing on their experience within the industry."

Mr Gianotti said the Guidelines meet the needs of all sport and recreation organisations and activities.

They promote good risk management frameworks for use at all levels, which can be applied to specific events, team goals or whole organisations.
